IU Cyberinfrastructure News May 2013

  1. Debuting in November 2011, the Rockhopper Penguin on Demand (POD) cluster is a collaborative effort to deliver cluster computing as a service in a secure environment. Led by Penguin Computing and Indiana University, the project also included founding user-partners University of Virginia, University of California Berkeley, and University of Michigan. The cluster has been in production for over a year now, long enough for additional details to emerge on this interesting HPC cloud use case.

As explained in a presentation delivered at the International Plant and Animal Genome Conference in San Diego earlier this year by IU's Barbara Hallock, Rockhopper's services are provided by both the National Center for Genome Analysis Support and the partnership between Indiana University and Penguin Computing. Users benefit from the availability of on-demand cycles on a real HPC cluster at a lower price point than lower-performance virtualized offerings, such as Amazon's EC2 cloud.

  2. Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL) staff are proud to announce the successful delivery of the first production IQ-Tilt to the Innovation Center (IC) on the IUB campus. This IQ-Tilt was fully assembled at the AVL's R&D facilities on the Indianapolis campus and will be installed in the lobby of the IC. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the research and analytic needs of the many PTI researchers and staff that work in the building but will also serve as an engaging point of interest for building visitors.

  6. The HPC Educators Program focuses on undergraduate educators and SC attendees interested in integrating HPC and computational and data-enabled science and engineering into classrooms. It also engages government and industry with the HPC educator community and provides a forum to share best practices.

SC13 continues the tradition of offering a high-quality education program, providing interested attendees with the opportunity to learn from and interact with internationally recognized experts who teach undergraduate and early career students in all areas of computational science and engineering, computer science and engineering, high performance computing, networking and storage. HPC Educators Program sessions are focused on teaching these topics to undergraduate students with emphasis on curriculum development and pedagogy and on best teaching practices of interest to undergraduate HPC educators and general SC attendees.

At SC12, the LittleFe Buildout was integrated into the HPC Educators program as a one-day activity. The plan for SC13 is to conduct the LittleFe Buildout as a multiple-day activity.

LittleFe Buildout applications will be accepted May 1 - June 6 at the SC13 submission site:
    https://submissions.supercomputing.org/

HPC Educators Applications for Travel Support will be accepted May 1 - June 6 at the SC13 submission site:

  7. The HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC) announced the availability of data mining and analytics tools for the HathiTrust Digital Library, a collection of digital texts from over 70 research libraries around the world. The new tools provide a much-needed entry point to large-scale analysis of HathiTrust's contents.

Indiana University and the University of Illinois are the founding partners of the HTRC. The new infrastructure release follows an aggressive development path set forth by the HTRC Executive Management Team at the 2012 HTRC UnCamp, a gathering of HTRC developers, researchers and librarians. Users can now apply sophisticated computational research methodology across the large-scale collection, leveraging metadata crafted over time by libraries.
